NAPLES, Fla.– Speeding on Pompei Lane in Naples continues to increase.
Pompei Lane, located between Goodlette-Frank and US-4, is used as a through street by Naples drivers.
Susan Gardner has lived on Pompei Lane since 1993 and has watched the traffic increase throughout the years.
“The cars use this street as a thorough fair, to get either to 41 or wherever they are going or to get to Goodlette,” Gardner said.
Gardner said the problem is the speed they are driving at.
Adam Carter along with other people who live on Pompei Lane has been working with the county to stop speeders on their street.
“The speed limit is 25, no one is going 25,” Carter said.
Carter has even tracked the drivers himself, some speeders clocking up to 40-miles per hour.
Mary Marchal has lived on Pompei Lane for over 30 years and said it wasn’t always like this.
“When I first moved here, there must have been two cars going up and down the road,” Marchal said.
“We have so many people that just go by here some of them 100 miles per hour. It’s just gotten really out of hand here.”
Marchal worries about the kids, her neighbor across the street, and those who walk to the bus stop.
Also worried, Gardner doesn’t even feel safe walking her dog Dexter.
“They don’t even go around you; they just kind of know you work their way inside the lane,” Gardner said.
So the community of Sorrento Gardens has presented a petition to the county for help.
The Collier County Sheriff’s Office is listening, installing not just one but three speed detection signs as part of a traffic study.
“There are a series of steps we have to go through regarding education, enforcement, and eventually engineering,” Carter said.
Right now, the community is passing out flyers in order to educate drivers about the dangers of speeding.
However, many residents think these speed monitoring signs won’t be enough.
“I don’t see the traffic slowing down anytime soon, it’s maybe a temporary bandaid measure but I don’t think it’s going to be a permanent one,” Gardner said.
Some residents think speed bumps will fix the issue.
“It’s really about obeying the speed limit and putting in some mitigation factors whether its speed bumps or something else that will actually force traffic to slow down,” Carter said.
