MARCO ISLAND, Fla. – A man caught and gutted a bonnethead shark on South Beach in Marco Island creating a spectacle that was all caught on camera on Friday.
The man can be seen in the video beheading and cutting the shark as a crowd forms.
“Its disgusting, there is a right time and the right place for something like that,” Diane Marzula said.
Captain Perry Bedell with On a Mission Fishing Charters said the man did everything right and the fisherman had to act fast to persevere the meat.
“I mean from an outsiders point of view it does seem a little graphic to someone who is not used to that sort of thing, guy brings in the shark and instantly cuts it head off seems like the enemy in reality thats the quickest and most humane way to kill and harvest that animal,” Bedell said.
Those who eat bonnethead sharks said they are delicious.
Although a gutting of a shark is not a sight many people on a beach see, its quite common on a pier and perfectly legally.
Bonnethead sharks are considered Group 1 sharks meaning you can keep them no matter the size.
