SANIBEL, Fla. – A young opossum received a tiny eye patch after it underwent surgery in Sanibel following a cat attack.
The ‘Virginia opossum’ also known as the North American opossum was admitted to the Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife (CROW) weeks ago after the animal’s left eye was severely damaged in a cat attack, according to CROW.
Veterinarians had to remove the opossum’s eye, wildlife officials said.
CROW reports the opossum has since been healing well and is healthy. They also said that opossums don’t rely heavily on eyesight and it should be easy for the young animal to adapt to a new lifestyle.
Wildlife officials said the opossum will be released when it’s old enough.
