CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla.– An accidental discharge in Englewood killed a 16-year-old girl on March 31st.
More than two months after the incident Hayden Wik and his mom are both facing criminal charges. The teen is facing manslaughter while his mother is charged with allowing her son to have a gun.
According to law enforcement, Higgs was shot after her 17-year-old boyfriend accidentally fired a gun inside his home.
When Charlotte County deputies responded to the scene, Wik was very upset, expressing suicidal intentions.
According to officials, Wik went to put his gun away and pulled the trigger to release tension, which pushed out a bullet that killed Higgs.
Court documents provide new details about the scene and interviews with witnesses. Investigators continue working to determine what exactly happened at the home.
Higgs’ friend, Elizabeth Gerber, described her as ambitious, selfless and giving.
“In this situation, it destroyed multiple lives. Some on our side of it will never ever be healed. Life will never be the same, it will never go back to normal,” Gerber said.
Both Hayden and Lori Wik are out of jail on bond.
