ENGLEWOOD, Fla. – The mother of a teen accused of accidentally shooting and killing a 16-year-old girl in Englewood was arrested for allowing her son to illegally own a gun.
The Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office said 17-year-old Hayden Wik was arrested for manslaughter with a firearm and possession of a firearm by a minor. The shooting happened on Euler Avenue on March 31.
Wik’s mother, Lori Lynn Wik, was arrested on Wednesday, June 16, and taken to the Charlotte County Jail for booking. Lori is accused of knowingly and willingly allowing Hayden to possess a gun, deputies said.
The accidental shooting killed 16-year-old Autumn Higgs. Charlotte County deputies said during their initial investigation, they determined the gun was fired accidentally by Wik.
Neighbors said it wasn’t long after the shooting death of the 16-year-old that the family moved out of the home where it happened.
The 911 audio from the night of March 31 is chilling, and it’s one that Chester Robert-Davis said he will never forget.
“We were sitting here watching TV, then we heard sirens, they kept coming in, kept coming in, kept coming in, there had been at least 15 vehicles down there,” Robert-Davis said. “I could hear gunshots a lot down there. When I was interviewed by the police, they said how do you know it was him? I said I don’t, but I know it came from that direction.”
Now all he can remember was the sweet 16-year-old girl faithfully walking dogs through the neighborhood.
“She was a very nice girl, and just seeing her walk the dogs down the road, so friendly, just nice people you know?” he said.
The sheriff’s office investigated the incident and sent the findings of the investigation to the State Attorney’s Office for review. Prosecutors did find probable cause to issue a warrant for Wik’s arrest on June 8.
Wik was placed in custody by Charlotte County deputies and taken to jail.
