CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla. — The Kingsway Golf Course is getting ready for some TLC. Grass and weeds are currently overwhelming the property. Allegiant Airlines is hoping to bring some beauty back to the space soon.
Right now the private property golf course is closed. The Watsics live next door to the once thriving course and said now it’s just plain gross.
“Just everything is dilapidated, all the grass is burnt out, it’s overgrown in spots,” Gladys Watsic said.
“Our neighbor up the street who plays golf, he used to play golf over there all the time. He says the place was one of the best golf courses around,” her husband, Michael, said.
Allegiant will be restoring the golf course as part of its Sunseeker project. The renderings below show what the revamped holes could look like.
“Now that golf course will be available to members only and to our hotel guests, that’s it. It’s not a public golf course. It will be open just for hotel guests and members,” John Redmond said, president of the airline.
Before the clubs and tees can get back to the property, a lot of work needs to be done. It started last year, but COVID-19 had other plans.
“Like everything else it got put on hold because of the obvious. But we are working on it now,” Redmond said, “and as you would expect it will be one of the best golf courses here in SWFL.”
For the Watsics, that news is the best they’ve heard all week.
“We are thrilled, thrilled about it because prior to it being purchased the place was pristine,” Gladys said.
If golf is your thing, don’t grab your clubs just yet. Allegiant expects the golf course to reopen in the first quarter of 2023 alongside the resort.
