Today, as we honor those who have served, we reflect on our own personal connections to the U.S military. NBC2 anchors Kyla Galer and Nate Foy are introducing their family members who have proudly served.
Nate Foy’s grandfather, George Foy, served in the Army in Korea. Nate’s nickname for him was “Pop-Pop-Pee.” George owned a car dealership in Philadelphia. He had seven children, including Nate’s father, Chris. George loved taking the Foy family fishing and teaching them about respect, courage and hard work.
“He was as tough as he was loving,” Nate said.
Nate’s grandfather on his mother’s side, Robert Pini, served in the Navy in World War 2. He owned a restaurant in Foxborough, Massachusetts and was a father of four, including Nate’s mother, Noel.
“I never met him because he died before my birth, but his memory lives on in my family,” Nate said.
Both of Kyla Galer’s grandfathers served in the military.
Her father’s father, Melvin Galer, is a veteran of World War 2. Unfortunately, she never got to meet him. He died before she was born. His death was not during his time served in the military. Her family still refers to him as “Zadie,” which means grandfather in Yiddish.
Kyla’s grandfather on her mother’s side, Lucky Harrison, served in the Navy. He was out to sea from 1958-61. He says, modestly, he had an “easy” job compared to others who served. Harrison worked on the admiral’s ship, as a legal specialist. He says the biggest lesson he learned as a young man serving was self-discipline.
“You have to have it, or you can’t function with the group,” Harrison said.
