LEE COUNTY, Fla. – A Florida man was found guilty in a hit-and-run crash and drug trafficking case in Lee County.
Rodney Davis, 38, was found guilty after a three-day trial, according to the State Attorney’s Office.
A sergeant with the Lee County Sheriff’s Office was heading home when he saw a car going over the Midpoint Bridge at 97 miles per hour back in June 2018. Prosecutors said the driver continued to speed up to 127 miles per hour as he approached the toll booth on the bridge, which is a 45 mile per hour zone.
The car then got off the bridge at Del Prado Boulevard and made a right turn into a Jeep, the State Attorney’s Office said. The head-on crash happened as the Jeep was stopped at a red light. The driver of the car got out and left the scene of the crash.
Davis’ airbag deployed and blood droplets were found on the steering wheel, according to prosecutors. The blood was sent for testing and the DNA matched Davis. Investigators also found a duffle bag was in the backseat of the car which included Davis’ personal items, including a toothbrush that matched his DNA also.
The bag also had a trafficking amount of fentanyl and ethylpentlone, a Scheduled I narcotic. The State Attorney’s Office said Davis was later arrested by the Fort Myers Police Department after identifying him during a traffic stop for speeding.
Davis was found guilty of six charges, including leaving the scene of a crash involving injury and reckless driving causing property damage as well as drug trafficking charges, prosecutors confirmed.
