A makeshift neighborhood landfill in Golden Gate Estates is looking a bit cleaner Wednesday.
NBC2 told you about the illegal dumping site off 4th Ave SE Tuesday night. The wooded area was filled with broken glass, dirty boats, tattered clothing, and garbage. Neighbors hoped someone would step in to help.
Less than 24 hours later, Collier County Waste Management crews visited the wooded patch of land, loaded two boats up with trash, and pushed them to the curb.
Nearby residents like Joe Gold and Paige Brokopp saw our story and wanted to help. They headed over to the site in Brokopp’s truck to pick up dozens of tires left on the site.
Gold said, “We like to collect trash that helps out the community as well as helps out ourselves. We got some goat pens and some chickens in the back so whatever we can repurpose and reuse…like these tires back here.”
Their goal is to turn the stack of tires into a jungle gym for their goats. “We half-bury them in the ground so they’ll jump from tire to tire or we make stacks of tires. It’s just something that they can play with.
It’s a good thing where they won’t slip and fall off of them. To them it’s fun,” he said.
NBC2 asked Collier County Waste Management when the boats and remaining debris will be picked up but did not receive a response.
