As he zooms through his living room, nine-year-old Carter Rhodes knows his wheelchair is pretty cool. “But it’s about to get even cooler,” Carter said with a smile.
Last year, Carter’s parents entered their son into a contest run by the Muscular Dystrophy Association to give one child a wheelchair makeover. Carter, who was born with a rare form of muscular dystrophy, won.
A Portland-based non-profit called Magic Wheelchair helped transform Carter’s wheelchair into a “Ghostbusters”-themed ride. Ghostbusters is Carter’s favorite film.
“Wheelchairs are freeing,” Christine Getman, executive director of Magic Wheelchair, said. “And Magic Wheelchair celebrates the freedom and inclusion and the empowerment that mobility devices give us.”
Carter’s wheelchair is now a Ghostbusters-lover’s dream. He got to see it for the first time at an event on Monday morning.
“This is really amazing!” Carter exclaimed. “I love it.”
And if anyone in Southwest Florida needs any ghosts caught, they now know who to call.
