HENDRY COUNTY, Florida – One day after 65 dogs were removed from his property on Mayoral Street in Hendry County, we attempted to talk to Juan Perez Montero.
He wouldn’t come to the fence that blocked off his property.
“Some of them you can obviously tell that the condition that they are is not good. Obviously a lot of them are hungry and are very frightened. Right now we are really concerned with their health and well being,” said Tito Nieves with the Clewiston Police Department.
Montero was arrested and released from jail the same day that the dogs were taken from his home. The Hendry County Sheriff’s Office says that it was for an incident not related to this situation.
If you ask some of the neighbors who live next door to Montero they don’t think that the dogs should have been taken.
“I think the Sheriff’s Office is in the wrong here. I don’t believe those dogs should have been taken. He (Montero) was taking those dogs in because people drop those dogs off on this road and he takes them in, so he is getting punished for it,” said Daniel Long Jr.
“I’ve seen some of the dogs looking skinny, but I don’t know I don’t think he should have had them all taking away. He’s put in work to keep those dogs,” said Daniel Long Sr
The Hendry County Sheriff’s Office has opened an investigation into whether or not Montero was involved in neglecting the 66 dogs or if in fact he just didn’t have the means to take care of them which according to Sheriff’s Office can be considered an offense.
