LEE COUNTY, Fla. — Governor Ron DeSantis allocated $5 million dollars of funding to the State Housing Initiatives Partnership (SHIP) Disaster Assistance Program, which provides low-income families with money to repair their homes or get temporary housing.
DeSantis allocated the money to the six hardest hit counties in Florida. Every county has the option to decide how residents can get the funds.
At first in Lee County, only non-profits were allowed to apply for the program. But after the most recent report, the county changed its mind.
“It upsets me. It really does… I don’t feel like the non-profits should be in there — I feel that we should be able to go in officially and apply the help that we need,” Lee County Resident Dalela Robinson said.
Now, Robinson is thrilled to hear the county listened to her plea.
“I am happy now haha, at least something went good today. I feel really good about it. I want to cry,” Robinson said.
Robinson lost her home and her job thanks to Hurricane Ian.
