FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Fort Myers Police Department (FMPD) is increasing its presence in Downtown Fort Myers after a man was shot in the chest last Saturday night while he was walking to his car after work.
The shooter still hasn’t been caught yet.
A Sergeant from FMPD told NBC2 that they’re working to identify the shooter and are making progress.
FMPD wants to assure everybody that Downtown Fort Myers is a safe place to be. Specialty police units will be working and officers are being paid overtime so they can be in more places at once, stated FMPD.
The normal barricades will be up and night and security cameras will be recording.
Even though a man was shot last weekend, crowds haven’t gotten smaller. There are several events happening downtown this weekend. Cinco de Mayo, Art Walk, and a cosplay event, just to name a few.
Customers say they’re here to support the businesses and say the chaos that happened last weekend isn’t keeping them away. Tammy Calow said, “I think it was just a freak thing. I mean we’ve been coming here for quite a long time and it’s safe. I feel safe here.”
Brian Calow said, “Some dumb*** with a gun that’s all it was. He’s not coming back because he doesn’t want to go to jail.”
