COLLIER COUNTY, Fla. — A Golden Gate Estates woman is facing manslaughter charges after an infant drowned in a bathtub.
According to the Collier County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO), Nicole Laber (29) also lied to deputies about how the child drowned.
Deputies said Laber staged the infant’s death to make it appear as if it were an accident.
The incident happened at her home on Everglades Boulevard around 7:40 AM on Saturday, June 17.
CCSO deputies tried to resuscitate the infant until paramedics and firefighters arrived. Despite their efforts, the child was pronounced dead at a hospital.
At first, Laber told CCSO she left the infant inside the home unattended to briefly retrieve her dog and another child in her care after they went out the front door.
She said when she returned, she found the infant face-down and slumped over on the floor in the dog’s water bowl.
However, CCSO investigators discovered Laber actually left the infant unattended in a bathtub while strapped to a booster seat. According to the report, the infant drowned after the booster seat tipped over and trapped the child in a few inches of water.
Deputies said Laber cleaned up the scene, dressed the deceased child in a diaper and lied to investigators.
Laber was taken to Collier County Jail. She was charged with aggravated manslaughter of a child.
