COLLIER COUNTY, Fla. — Rene Miles has been in prison for six years for the 2015 crash that killed Cecil Riner.
Riner’s wife, Jessica, was in the car with him during the crash. He left behind four sons.
Today in court, Miles’ lawyer argued for a retrial. The issue of the allegations was a biased jury.
“I don’t think I can do that again, I don’t think I can do that again,” said Jessica Riner. “It’s harder now without their dad than it was when they were little. My oldest son is going to college and my youngest is 12.”
In 2017, a jury convicted Miles, 48, of DUI and manslaughter for the chain reaction wreck. He was sentenced to 22 years in prison.
“I just don’t want to be back here. I thought this part of my life was over and I wouldn’t have to deal with this again,” said Jessica.
Since then, Miles has been trying to appeal the sentencing. His initial appeal has already been rejected.
Miles’ lawyer is back in court today. He argued Miles should once again get a new trial, arguing that a jury was biased in the original case.
“It’s all a bunch of crap. Listening to it, it just makes me mad,” said Jessica.
