Summer break is over for students but we can’t say the same about that summer weather.
Southwest Florida has been experiencing rising temps and needless it has been hot, humid and muggy!
Now that you’re kids will spend more time outdoors as school starts, we spoke to the experts about how to keep them safe.
First and foremost, you want to make your kids stay hydrated during this hot weather.
That means drinking plenty of fluids
Dr. Kathleen Tenrreiro is a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner and FGCU School of Nursing Asst. Professor.
She says kids should be reminded to take sips of water every ten to fifteen minutes.
You are also reminded to apply sunscreen on your kids to protect them from skin damage and lower their risk of skin cancer.Recommended SPF is 30 or 40.
“Make sure parents can apply in the morning but if they are playing sports and they’re going to be out there for long periods of time make sure they go to practice or games so that they can reapply too,” advised Dr. Tenrreiro.
It is also important to look out for signs of heat exhaustion.
“They’ll either get really irritable or on the opposite end of the spectrum whether they’re a little bit sleepy or they just want to sit down, head on their desk after recess that would be a warning sign,” said Dr. Kathleen Tenrreiro, Pediatric Nurse Practitioner and FGCU School of Nursing Asst. Professor.
