CAOE CORAL, Fla. – A busy Cape Coral intersection is undergoing key changes that the city hopes will make it much safer for drivers.
Crews were out early Monday morning working on the Del Prado Boulevard and De Navarra Parkway intersection constructing a new traffic signal.
Officials with the city of Cape Coral tell NBC2 they decided to move forward with the project after completing a traffic study.
Its findings warranted a signal at the bustling intersection.
NBC2 has learned that the contract for designing and constructing the traffic signal was $720,922. The bill is being footed by the developer, Entrada.
Some who work and live in the area are excited to see the signal finished and the roads safer.
“Just coming into Del Prado, this can be a racetrack area,” said Josh Wurtsbaugh, who lives in Northeast Cape Coral and works nearby.
“…The gal I work with said that there’s been several, several bad rollovers, accidents and T-bones in this area, so it’s nice to see them get some work done,” said Wurtsbaugh.
NBC2 previously reported that Cape Coral Police report working more than 60 crashes at the intersection since the beginning of 2020.
Construction on the project will last from Monday to Friday this week, with crews resuming work next Monday, Dec. 4.
The traffic signal is expected to be functioning by early next year.
