As the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks approaches, the pain loss is still fresh in the mind of retired New York City firefighter Gerry Sanford who lost many of his brothers.
Sanford retired to Naples more than two decades ago, but an old NYC Firefighters helmet discovered at a firehouse in Pelican Bay brought him back to the city the day before the attack.
He presented the helmet at the rededication of a new firehouse on September 10, 2001, while seeing all of his old firefighter buddies.
For a lot of them, it would be the last time seeing one another.
The next day, 2 planes flew into the towers and while people were running out of the building, Gerry knew his former colleagues were running in.
He decided to go back to work, as Press Secretary for the FDNY where he helped to arrange news conferences and funerals.
He hopes his new book, “It started with a helmet” will educate the next generation about the terror attack and how the nation came together to support the victims and America.
