FORT MYERS, Fla. – Inflation is on the rise, the Bureau of Labor Statistics says the consumer price index has risen 7.5%.
One place people are really feeling the impact is the grocery store.
Since last year, eggs are up .39 cents, ground beef is up .82 cents and bacon is up 1.24 cents!
NBC2 spoke to economists and has tips on ways to shop for groceries while keeping a few dollars in your pocket.
With the inflation rate continuing to climb, economists say right now is the time to really get conscious of where your money is going.
In January inflation exceeded the 40-year high set in December.
Most increases are to food, electricity and shelter.
“Make a list and stick to it. Too often we like to go to the grocery store and rather than go directly to the things we need, we walk through all of the aisles and take a look at everything. Don’t do that,” said Victor Claar, FGCU economist. “Make that trip to the grocery store more like a surgical strike.”
Things you can do before heading to the store:
- Check your pantry to see exactly what you need and write it down.
- Plan out your weekly meals.
- Once you’re there: consider store brand products.
- Buy in bulk, oftentimes those sections have great deals and you’ll help the environment.
- Think about avoiding pre-cut or pre-sliced produce since it costs more.
- Consider buying frozen or canned veggies, these also hold nutrients and won’t go bad as quickly.
- You can also join the store’s loyalty program and find coupons.
