ESTERO, Fla. — Another community hit hard by Hurricane Ian is the Village of Estero. Residents say storm surge traveled up the Estero River, and combined with strong winds to level neighborhoods.
On Saturday, Susan Lindenmuth from Estero Fire Rescue was the first contact some had had with the outside. The news from them wasn’t good. Roberta Addy, who lives with her boyfriend in a mobile home community along the river, was distraught after their Riverfront home was flooded.
“This is awful, this place should be condemned. I’m sure you rode around,” she said.
Some were lucky that home was all they had lost.
“Yeah, see that green truck? The guy that owns that, he drowned.” said Dennis Hentges, from Estero, “He tried to get away from the water and fell, I guess the water got him, and the next day, they found him in the water.”
But we found stories of hope too. Because of Hurricane Ian, downed trees blocked Sheryll Lane, but after the storm, residents managed to clear the road of tree debris themselves, using only a chainsaw and manpower.
“We have to do it, we don’t wait on the county, we will do what we have to do. There is so much work all over the place,” said Randhaur Singh of Estero.
While an iconic landmark, the largest Mysore Fig Tree in the US, is still standing.
“We have an amazing group of resilient people here in the Estero community and in southwest Florida in general,” said Susan Lindenmuth from Estero Fire Rescue.
