LEE COUNTY, Fla.– After nearly two years on the run, one of Southwest Florida’s Crime Stoppers Most Wanted fugitives is back behind bars, officials said.
Alfonzo aka “Champ” Churchwell, 46, was arrested in Lehigh Acres on Tuesday, April 18, 2023.
Churchwell was wanted on a federal probation violation based on charges of possession of a firearm, aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, fleeing and eluding, and filing a false police report, according to the SWFL Crime Stoppers.
He has been a cocaine and heroin dealer since the early 1990s. Additionally, Churchwell was previously featured on Southwest Florida’s Crime Stoppers 10 Most Wanted, and the U.S. Marshals Service had offered a $10,000 reward.
“Churchwell’s arrest is testament that time eventually expires for these fugitives and that law enforcement, and the community, is always keeping their eyes open,” said Trish Routte, Crime Stoppers Manager. “The US Marshals worked relentlessly to find Churchwell, and we know that our community is now much safer that he’s behind bars.”
Churchwell has been arrested three times, twice in Lee County and once in Charlotte County. The Lee County Sheriff’s Office arrested him in 2003 for charges including selling heroin and again in 2008 for illegal trafficking, according to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office.
