NAPLES, Fla. — The Naples Community Hospital system is celebrating another massive philanthropic gift for improved heart and stroke care in Collier County.
“This gift not only impacts the lives of those affected by stroke, but it also inspires our team to continue pushing the boundaries of what is possible in stroke care,” said Mazen Abuawad, MD, and the new Medical Director of the Wingard Stroke Institute.
Diana and Don Wingard presented NCH with a $20 million gift on Tuesday morning, focusing on stroke care at the hospital. The new wing of the planned cardiology center will be named the “Wingard Stroke Institute.” This is the second $20 million gift the hospital system has received in the last two weeks.
“The reason we chose to support the Stroke Program was to help NCH build on the successes of Dr. Abuawad and his team and ensure that Naples will always have a Stroke Center rivaling the best in America in terms of patient outcomes,” Wingard said.
According to NCH and the Wingards, stroke care is essential with an older population, as we see in Collier County. In previous situations, those with severe ailments had been forced to leave Collier County for treatment, going to places like Lee Health and Miami. That will no longer be the case.
“We hope our gift will inspire others to support this critical program and the many other important initiatives at NCH,” said Wingard.
The donation will go towards the new center, purchasing state-of-the-art technology, continued education, and new hires.
A date has not been set for the construction of the center.
