NAPLES, Fla. — Two out-of-state teenagers have been locked up for exploring the end of the destroyed Naples Pier and looking to jump off, before one assaulted an officer, according to the Naples Police Department (NPD).
Naples Police Officers Brendan Melody and Jordan Harrington were dispatched to the Naples Pier Friday night at approximately 8 PM regarding three young men trespassing in the restricted area of the Naples Pier.
Officers witnessed three teenagers, including 18-year-old Quinn Riordan and 19-year-old Matthew Austin, nearing the end of the Hurricane-decimated Pier beyond the concession stand. They had crossed over the large, restricted area barricade.
“Officers cannot access the area without a key due to the damaged part of the pier, which creates a hazardous, dangerous situation with missing floorboards and rails. This situation creates a severe risk of falling from the pier,” said the Naples Police report.
Naples Police told the boys to climb back over the fence one by one. Austin was arrested immediately and booked on city ordinance violations.
Following Austin’s arrest, Naples Police documents show Riordan hurdled the fence and attempted to make an escape by running along the Pier toward land. Riordan was tackled during the pursuit, and fell onto Officer Jordan Harrington’s arm, breaking it.
In the scuffle, documents said that Riordan “was actively resisting by pushing, pulling, and kicking officers to escape.”
While Riordan was being handcuffed and restrained, a third young man jumped from the pier onto the sand and ran towards 11th Avenue South. Naples Police said he was possibly wearing blue swim shorts with no shirt or shoes. He is still at large.
According to the report provided to NBC2 News, below is a breakdown of the officer’s injuries:
“Officer Harrington advised he believed his right forearm was possibly broken. Officer Melody observed numerous abrasions and contusions to Officer Harrington’s right elbow, forearm, and wrist. As a result of resisting both officers, Riordan sustained minor abrasions to his forehead, arms, and legs. Collier County EMS was called to the scene to evaluate Officer Harrington and Riordan. Officer Harrington was transported by ambulance to Naples Community Hospital by Collier County EMS for further treatment and evaluation of his injuries. Riordan declined medical treatment. Officer Melody sustained a minor abrasion to his left elbow and did not seek medical treatment.”
Quinn Riordan, of Western Springs, Illinois, has been arrested on charges of battery to a law enforcement official, resisting arrest, and violation of Naples City Ordinances.
Matthew Austin, of La Grange Highlands, Illinois, was taken into custody for city ordinance violations.
