LEE COUNTY, Fla. — Time is ticking for parents to plan after-school care for their kids this school year.
Rob Spicker with Lee County Public Schools said parents were told about shorter routes and zone changes in the spring.
Spicker said the shortage of bus drivers and the long, sometimes unsafe drop-off locations are some reasons for the changes.
The school policy said buses can pick up and drop off students at their homes– but any other location is not a guarantee.
The schools realize adjustments will need to be made for the parents, but say they gave them the time to do so.
They had to decide if they want to stay at their school and provide their own transportation, or switch to a new school.
Gabriela Rubio works at Fantasy World Academy in Lehigh Acres. She’s worried about losing at least 50 Lee County public school students.
“They call us like their aunts, their grandmas, we are family to them — especially the ones that have been here since they were babies,” said Rubio.
“We tried to be as clear as we could be back in the spring that courtesy busing was not a guarantee,” said Spicker.
He said the schools will be offering after-school programs for students at every elementary school this year to help parents get the care they need.
