PUNTA GORDA, Fla. — A popular Punta Gorda pier will remain closed for at least the next year.
The fishing pier at Laishley Park was already deteriorating prior to Hurricane Ian. The storm pushed the damages so far over the edge that experts deemed the pier unsafe to be on.
City Council approved $1 million to be used toward repairing the pier. However, city leaders report it could be a year to a year and a half before it can be reopened.
Pilings are damaged, decking needs to be replaced, and the concrete approach was undermined, according to the city manager’s office.
Until construction can be completed, blockades and a closed sign will remain at the entrance to the pier. There are other fishing spots available at Gilchrist and Ponce parks in Punta Gorda.
